Excitement Surrounds the Potential Return of Trump Tweets

 


As Elon Musk inches closer and closer to a Twitter buyout, Republicans prepare for a possible return of Donald Trump and other popular party members to the social media platform. Musk has said that he believes the app should be a platform where free speech thrives, so he will likely reorganize and relax different censor methods that are in place. Not everyone is excited for the takeover, however, as many fear that possible the return of banned users after the reorganization will allow a massive influx of disinformation back onto the application.

            House Republicans have taken to social media to express their excitement at the possible return of Trump and relax of Twitter standards of conduct. The official Twitter account @houseGOP has been repeatedly tweeting at Elon Musk encouraging change from the potential purchase. Different members of Donald Trump’s family have said that they might return but are hesitant. They don’t understand how Twitter justified banning Trump when there are extremist organizations that actually incite violence with active accounts on the app.

            Another controversial character excited for the potential reorganization of Twitter is Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene’s personal account was banned after she spread misinformation about COVID-19, but her government account is still active.

            If Elon Musk reorganizes and restructures Twitter and allows banned users to return, will there be a noticeable amount of misinformation flooding onto the app? How will other users react to the return of those once banned?

    It sounds like Musk's offer to purchase Twitter is finalized now, which in my opinion is exciting! Elon Musk said that social media "is a place where people on the far-right and far-left should be equally unhappy." I think that message is promising... it seems like he's going to work very hard to make Twitter a place where everyone can freely express opinions, including Trump. Although, given that Trump created his own social network, I can't imagine that he'd join his competitor.

    I am honestly worried about the future of Twitter. It has always been, in my opinion, toxic. However, with Musk in control and his goal to make this the platform for free speech, I worry that there will be little to no content regulation to stop misinformation and false claims from flooding people's feeds. Hopefully this isn't the case and he finds a way to balance everyone's right to free speech with content regulation.

      I agree with you. Free speech is great but this can definitely lead to more false information being spread around. A bunch of people primarily get there news from Twitter, so if he's advocating for free speech than there should be parameters so that people know what is opinion and what is fact.

    With elon musk wanting to make twitter a hub for "freedom of speech" i wonder if it is also going to be a platform that will in turn be a place where it is also going to be free of consequence. and i'm not only talking about far left or right content, but also no regulations for hate speech, bullying or even a place for predators to run free, which it is already not too many consequences for those. I don't think i'm going to enjoy twitter as much as i do now since Elon's purchase went through i think. I already don't like his suggestion to give the people an edit button lol

    At this point, the fear of disinformation is something of the past. TikTok is a breeding ground for misinformation unlike any social media platform I have ever seen; therefore, the return of many banned accounts is justified and welcomed. It is up to the consumer of said information to ensure that the information is correct. Anyone with an iPhone can do a quick google search and find reputable evidence of whatever information is being relayed. Society needs to realize that we must enter an era of accountability on the consumers as well as the distributors of information.

Trump’s widely anticipated Truth Social has gotten off to a rocky start as many of the newly registered users are either highly inactive on the new platform or cross-post the same posts on other popular social media like Twitter of Facebook.
